I only got a brief look at the previous character creator before it went offline but I think this one is amazing. The rendering quality looks very good apart from a few points. The main areas I'd like to see changes to are...
- The colour pickers for sections like hair don't correspond well with what gets rendered.
- The primary and secondary hair colours often seem as if they should be the other way around.
- More options for grey hair would be good, since most of my characters are old.
- The colour of facial hair doesn't seem to correspond well to the hair colours chosen (after moving the facial hair offset slider to get it to render properly). Maybe the colour and intensity of facial hair should have a separate control.
- A few areas are clipping where they shouldn't. If you put on a long outer garment and look at the thumbs, you'll see this. Granted, this is a minor point.
- The character's movement during sculpting is a little too much. I'm not finding this as severe a problem as most who've posted here but I think it could be toned down a little.
- I know art assets are WIP (this leads on to my next main point) but yes, more hair styles (like the long Intaki ones), more clothes, etc.
Now, in terms of how and when we use this... I'd hate to think that we'd all spend 23 hours one day in January using this then never see it again. It's a lot of work from CCP to be used that little (yes, I know we'll see the results of it when Incarna comes along). During the time I've been playing Eve, I've changed my hair style a few times (IRL), my facial hair a couple of times and my clothes reasonably often. I haven't had any plastic surgery, but the fact is that quite a few parts of our appearance are not fixed. From the old Fanfest demos of Incarna, it looks as if we'll be able to change our clothes at will, which is good in view of CCP's approach of iterations. It allows the addition of more clothes on an ongoing basis without penalising those of us who use the character creator on day one in January. Likewise though, it should be easy (and either free or cheap) to go back to the character creator at will and change hair or facial hair. In real life, I decide on my facial hair from day to day by picking up a shaver (or not). Changing more fixed parts of our appearance takes a bit more effort but I wouldn't mind if we had to pay a little to go back and do some plastic surgery. (To limit people going wild, maybe the degree of changes to facial structure could be used to calculate a plastic surgery charge in ISK, but the question of charges is a side issue.)
I would just like to be reassured that after a prolonged session with the character creator on the release day, I won't be stuck with the results and no option to fine tune. It makes sense to me to be able to make changes later (possibly with the ease of doing this in game proportional to the ease of doing it in real life), especially since it allows further art assets to be added after the release date.
